Responsible gambling in the UK: signs and safeguards

Gambling is not a way to earn money or a fix for money problems. I’ve treated a run of wins as if it meant I had a system, then kept playing until the money was gone. It didn’t. If you’re gambling to cover bills, recover losses or make money you need, stop and take steps to block access rather than placing another bet.

Signs to look for

A problem can show up in ordinary, observable ways. For example:

  • You spend more time or money gambling than you planned.
  • You keep playing after deciding to stop, or raise your stakes to try to win back losses.
  • You hide gambling, deposits or losses from someone close to you.
  • You borrow, use money meant for essentials, or miss payments because of gambling.
  • You feel restless or irritable when you try to cut down.
  • Gambling disrupts sleep, work, study or time with other people.

One sign is enough to pause and act. You don’t need to wait until things get worse.

What to do now

If you’re logged in, open the account’s responsible gambling or safer gambling settings. Set a deposit or other financial limit you can afford, and use the account-level controls to reduce it if needed. Remote operators must prompt new customers to set a financial limit before their first deposit and provide accessible controls.

If a limit won’t keep you from gambling, use the operator’s self-exclusion tool. UKGC-licensed casinos must provide responsible gambling tools, including self-exclusion. Follow the on-screen steps and check that the exclusion has been confirmed. If you have accounts with several operators, you’ll need to use the relevant controls with each one.

That’s the practical route available here. I don’t have verified names, addresses or phone numbers for outside support services to give you, so I won’t guess or send you to an unverified contact.

Safeguards, and their limits

Operators must verify a customer’s age before allowing deposits. That check is not a sign that gambling is suitable for you, and it doesn’t prevent gambling from causing harm.

There are also rules around online slots in Britain: autoplay is banned, each spin must last at least 2.5 seconds, and the maximum stake in a game cycle is £2 for someone under 25 or £5 for someone aged 25 or older. These rules slow or limit parts of play; they don’t make gambling safe or turn it into a source of income.

Remote gambling operators cannot accept credit-card payments for gambling, including credit-card funding routed through a money service business. They also cannot accept wallet payments where credit-card funds can be used for gambling. A payment restriction is not a personal spending limit, though. It won’t stop you using other available funds.

If something is wrong with an operator

UKGC licensees must provide an internal complaints process and access to an approved Alternative Dispute Resolution service. If your concern is about how an operator has handled your account or complaint, use the complaints process shown by that operator and follow its instructions for escalating the matter to ADR.

For a problem with gambling itself, don’t wait for a complaint to be resolved before using account limits or self-exclusion. Close the route back into play first.
